Distribution Transformer and its history

Oil-filled Distribution Transformer also named oil immersed transformer, distribution transformer,voltage electrical power transformer etc.

What is Oil-filled Distribution Transformer?

Oil-filled Distribution Transformer is one of the important equipment in power supply & distribution system of industrial and mining enterprises and civil buildings. It reduces the network voltage of 10 (6) or 35 kV to 230/400 V bus voltage used by users. This kind of product is suitable for AC 50 (60) Hz, three-phase maximum rated capacity 2500 KA (single-phase maximum rated capacity 833 KA, generally not recommended to use single-phase transformer), can be used indoors (outside), capacity 315 KA and below can be installed on the pole, the ambient temperature is not higher than 40 ℃, not lower than – 25 ℃, the highest daily average temperature is 30 ℃, the highest annual average temperature is 20 ℃, relative humidity. No more than 90% (ambient temperature 25℃) and no more than 1000 m above sea level. If it does not conform to the above-mentioned conditions of use, appropriate quota adjustments shall be made in accordance with the relevant provisions of GB6450-86.

Oil-filled Distribution Transformer History

Transformer oil is a kind of petroleum liquid, which has the possibility of combustion and environmental protection shortcomings. However, due to the excellent performance and low cost of transformer oil, most power transformers still use transformer oil as insulation and cooling medium.


At the end of the 19th century, transformer oil began to be used as insulation and cooling medium. Oil-immersed Distribution transformer appeared. Besides abundant natural storage and low price, transformer oil has been widely used because of its following characteristics.
  1. With the use of fiber materials, the insulation performance is good, the insulation distance can be reduced and the cost can be reduced.
  2. Transformer oil has low viscosity and good heat transfer performance.
  3. The core and winding can be well protected from the influence of moisture in the air.
  4. Protect insulating paper and board from the effect of oxygen, reduce the aging of insulating material and prolong the life of transformer.
At present, most large and medium-sized transformers still use transformer oil as cooling and insulation medium, except for some special purpose medium and small capacity transformers and gas transformers. The insulation of transformer impregnated with transformer oil is grade A, and the long-term working temperature is 105 ℃.
